Academic Program, Achievement Expected and Evaluation Period At Kawartha Montessori School a complete curriculum is delivered including: French, Music, Art, Drama, Physical Education (including swimming and skating) and Outdoor Education. At KMS we have high academic standards; we meet or exceed Ministry of Education curriculum requirements. We provide individual and small group instruction. We have mixed age classes; emphasizing responsibility, self-discipline, initiative and independence. We have secure indoor and outdoor facilities. Parents receive three written reports during the school year. Each report is accompanied by a formal parent/teacher meeting in November, March and June. Reports are anecdotal and reflect a student's level of achievement without the use of letter grades or marks. Formal standardized testing (Canadian Achievement Test - CAT) is conducted yearly, beginning in grade 3, to establish percentile ranking and grade equivalent standing in reading, mathematics, language, spelling and in higher levels, study skills. Students graduating from the upper elementary level are well prepared for grade 7 in public or independent schools. Our Facility:
Located in a quiet residential neighbourhood, the KMS building has large well-equipped classrooms that are bright and attractive. Our completely fenced back yard is a one-acre playground featuring a large play structure, sandbox and a recently installed Sport Court - equipped with basketball hoops, a giant checker board and many other options for play. Our grounds are beautifully landscaped with native trees and a vegetable garden. The parents of the children who attend KMS feel very confident in the measures we take to keep our students safe in and out of the school.
When you walk through the doors of KMS you will notice the calm and welcoming nature of the environment. There are children engaged in their work and enjoying the community they are in.
Our Staff

Teachers hired require a minimum of a University Degree and Montessori training (approved by Association Montessori Internationale or the International Association of Montessori Educators) or Ontario Teacher Certification. Our preschool Classroom assistants are chosen for their exceptional ability to work well with children. KMS instructors in both the French and Arts programs have extensive experience, training and education. They have a strong commitment to the Montessori philosophy and their role in delivering a comprehensive and engaging program.
